DM objects to involving NGOs

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Feb. 3: The Malda district magistrate, Mr Sridhar Ghosh, has objected to the Malda zilla parishad's decision to engage NGOs for the construction of roads, toilets, renovation and maintenance work of panchayat buildings in the district.

To utilise funds allotted from the Twelfth Finance Commission, the Congress-BJP led Malda zilla parishad has shortlisted several clubs and NGOs to execute 89 schemes amounting to Rs 2.8 crore. The MZP has already distributed work among the NGOs and clubs.

Opposing the move, the Opposition in the MZP drew the district administration's attention towards the development alleging that the board has selected specific NGOs and clubs directly controlled by political leaders and members of the zilla parishad.

“I have written a letter to the principal secretary of the panchayat and rural development department seeking clarification about the schemes. We shall take a decision on the matter once we get the clarification,” said the Malda DM, Mr Sridhar Ghosh, today.

“We need to know whether the NGOs are entitled to get such work orders as made by the MZP,” the DM added.

It may be noted that the MZP executive officer had cancelled the tender process because the floated tenders had not been uploaded on the website, which is mandatory according to the PWD guidelines. The Opposition at the MZP has alleged that the MZP has selected NGOs and clubs of its choice to avoid floating tenders on the website.

The MZP sabhdhipati, Mrs Sabina Yeasmin, was not available for comment.
