Statesman News Service
MALDA, Feb 9: In protest against foreign investment into shopping malls such as Big Bazaar in the district and block levels, traders in Malda district will shut down their businesses and join an open assembly discussing the issue on 15 February.

The Malda Merchants’ Chamber of Commerce (MMCC) has asked all traders under its banner to shut down their trading houses and requested that they join an open assembly to begin a state conference of the Federation of Traders Organisation (FTO) of Bengal. The open assembly will be held at Satya Choudhury Indoor Stadium in Malda.

12,000 traders across the district are expected by the MMCC leaders to join the movement. The MMCC will also be demanding the restoration of peace in the Hills, Dooars and Lalgarh, as disturbances are seriously hindering trade.

The president of the Bharatiya Udyog Byaper Mandol (BUBM), Mr Shyam Bihari Mish, will be one of the state leaders addressing the rally. Leaders of the FTO will take part in the conference, along with the state secretary Mr Taraknath Tribedi and secretary of the Federation of Chamber of Commerce and Industries of north Bengal, Mr Biswajit Das.

The district secretary of the MMCC, Mr Jayanta Kundu, said: “In the state conference we will protest against the suffering of small traders due to foreign investment into shopping malls like Big Bazaar, supported by both the Central and state governments. The president of the BUBM firmly opposes the concept of the shopping mall."

“We will also protest against the deterioration of law and order in the Hills, Dooars and Lalgarh. Thousands of traders have suffered losses due to disturbances in these areas and the unlimited bandhs called by the agitators,” Mr Kundu added.
