Agitation against civic body

Statesman News Service
MALDA, 11 AUG: All 25-ward committees backed by the Left Front in the English Bazaar Municipal area will stage an agitation programme on 14 August in front of the office of the civic body to showcase the ‘malpractice’ and ‘failure’ of the Congress, Trinamul Congress and BJP-led board.

The ward committee members led by the district leadership held a meeting at Malda college auditorium on Sunday to formulate strategies for launching this agitation programme.

All leaders have come to a decision to focus on the issue of the garbage clearance problem in English Bazaar town and will demand the implementation of a solid waste management project following the norms of the pollution control board.

The CPI-M leader Mr Indrajit Mitra said: “This civic body did not mention a fund of more than one crore in its current budget. We will ask them where is the fund, granted by the government, for implementing the solid waste management project.”

“We would press the present civic body for the selection of suitable land for garbage dumping and implementation of the project,” Mr Mitra said.

The civic body recently had faced a problem in clearing garbage due to locals’ resistance to the dumping of garbage in a vat at Chandan Park (ward No 25) because of spreading pollution.

Besides, the LF leaders have decided to point out the misuse of developmental funds for various projects including the development of slum areas.

The district convener of the LF Mr Jiban Moitra said: “This civic body has failed to handle its own properties and many of them are sold off to do promoting business. At present the civic body has no land for keeping water tanks for drinking water. They helplessly keep them in the open air close to the bungalow of the SP and SDO.”

“At one time, the LF led board had recovered its land grabbed by others, but the present board has already sold off all of that land,” he added.
