Fulohar gets emergency flood protection

Statesman News Service
MALDA, 30 AUG: The irrigation and waterways department has started fresh flood protection work at Bhaluka Bazaar in Harishchandrapur-II block on the left bank of the river Fulohar.

Nearly Rs 1 crore has been allotted for this emergency work where the river Fulohar has eroded away two embankments and finally broke the last guard wall made by the local administration for flood protection a few days ago.

Engineers of the Mahananda division of the irrigation department are working to build a 350m small embankment day and night for preventing flood waters from entering the countryside from the river Fulohar. The department has planned to finish it before the coming next spell of flood waters in September.

It may be noted that flood waters from the river Fulohar inundated a few gram panchayats in Harishchandrapur-II and Ratua-I blocks. The Debipur gram panchayat areas were badly hit by the flood waters rendering more than 1,790 families homeless.

Flood victims are still in makeshift arrangements because the administration have not been able to clear stagnant flood waters rapidly from Debipur gram panchayat areas due to villagers’ resistance.

Though the district administration had decided to flatten embankments which blocked waterways in Debipur it did not take risk this because several villagers would have inundated.

At present, the stagnant waters are draining out slowly through alternative routes. As a result, the irrigation department is building an embankment where some areas on the bank of the river are under water.
