PHE takes up water theft issues in Malda

Statesman News Service
MALDA, 28 AUG: The Public Health Engineering (PHE) department has sought administrative help from the block level and local police station to stop the menace of arsenic-free water thefts in different places of the northern zone in Malda.

The executive engineer of PHE Malda division, Mr Swapan Maitra had informed the matter to BDO of Manikchak and Kaliachak II after detecting two such cases which had disrupted water supply in many areas since the past few days.

According to Mr Maitra, some locals had cut off the main pipe line located at Nazirpur in Manikchak block area twice for distributing arsenic free water.

“After repairing the pipeline on Tuesday the criminals damaged it again. We have informed the BDO of the matter.

“If such incidents continue to occue, we would lodge an FIR against the culprits identified through our preliminary investigation,” Mr Maitra said.

On the other hand, the owner of the Uttar Banga Women’s B Ed College located at Babla-Gita More in Kaliachak block II, took water connection from the main pipe line for its reservoirs in different areas without seeking permission from the authorised officilas.

The PHE officials disconnected their connection line and brought the matter to the notice of the local administrative officials. A few days ago the PHE officials refused to allow water connection to a government-aided training college at Sobhanagar in English Bazaar. “I have asked college authorities to apply for water connection legally”, said Mr Swapan Maitra, executive engineer, PHE Malda division. “Water supply has been hampered several times due to the menace of water theft,” he added.
