Statesman News Service
MALDA 17 AUG.: Though the cut off date, 15 August, for transplanting aman crop is over, the agriculture department has suggested to farmers that they continue transplantation after receiving sufficient rain over the past three days in this district.

According to the agriculture development officer (technical), Mr Soumendra Nath Das, farmers have been able to cover only 1,16,360 ha land out of 1.5 lakh ha land for aman cultivation in this district.

The progress rate of average transplantation of aman crop is 78 per cent in this district till yesterday.

The Chanchal sub-division has covered its 90 per cent till 16 August, which is better than Malda sub-division.

Yesterday, the district received 67.5mm rainfall. Almost all blocks have received sufficient rain for transplanting aman seedlings in the last three days.

Till yesterday, the district had already received 223.6 mm rainfall out of normal rainfall 302.4 mm in August.

Today, the district has received torrential rain since dawn.

“We are expecting that the district will receive normal rain in August. The farmers can at continue transplantation till 21 August to achieve the target,” said Mr Das.

Mr Das admitted that yield of production will be less than normal if farmers transplant after the cut off date of 15 August.

The district agriculture department today prepared a detailed report on aman transplantation for the district magistrate.

Watching the heavy shower in the last three days, the district magistrate Mr Sridhar Ghosh expressed happiness over the progress of transplantation of aman crop in this district.
