Hospital hosts wedding, patients suffer

Statesman News Service
MALDA, 11 AUG: The district health authority in Malda today woke up to telephone calls from the higher authorities in Kolkata complaining about a noisy marriage party held in the Malda hospital premises last night which needless to say caused a lot of inconvenience and disconfort to the patients.

The higher authorities in Kolkata had learnt that a marriage ceremony violating the silence zone was held in the hospital last night. The ceremony was held in a staff quarter close to the isolation ward and other wards of the district hospital. Loud speakers were used in the party which caused a lot of sound.

Having watched the incident on television, the state health authority contacted the chief medical officer of health in Malda and asked him to stop such programme within the hospital campus immediately. That set things in motion and the CMOH Dr Srikanta Roy went to the staff quarter this morning and instructed to undo the pandals and decoration of the marriage party.

It may be noted that a widow of the hospital’s former group ‘D’ staff had organised the wedding of her daughter last night. The family members were preparing for other rituals this morning but all preparations came to a halt when the CMOH reached the spot. The organizer sought apology, the CMOH said.
