Erosion worsens in Malda district

MALDA, 9 AUG.: Erosion along the banks of the river Foluhar in the northern part of the district continues unabated, threatening the damaged embankment at Bhaluka Bazaar in Harishchandrapur.

Though the Mahananda division of the irrigation department have been pressed into service to check erosion, officials are apprehensive of the outcome.

In view of the growing threat of erosion of the area, the sabhadhipati of Malda zilla parishad, Mrs Sabina Yeasmin today visited erosion-hit areas including Bhaluka Bazaar.

“Erosion continues to devour fresh areas of the district. The engineers who are working here say the embankment could be breached at any moment due to erosion”, Mrs Yeasmin said over phone.

Yesterday, the district magistrate, Mr Sridhar Ghosh visited the spot and oversaw the present anti-erosion work there.

Villagers, however, alleged that the present work has failed to stem erosion here. “The ongoing work during monsoon is nothing but wastage of fund”, a resident said.

Villagers fear that a large part of this area will be inundated if the present embankment is breached and the water level rises over 28 metre ie. above extreme danger level. ;SNS
