Water level rises in Malda rivers

Statesman News Service
MALDA, 4 AUG: According to the irrigation department, the water levels of three rivers in Malda district, especially that of river Mahananda, are rising gradually.

The district flood control cell recorded a water level of 17.92 metres for Mahananda at mid-day today.

On the other hand, owing to fluctuations of the water level of Fulohar, erosion continued on both its left and right banks.

According to the control room, the water level of Fulohar was 26.15 metres today, receding from 26.90 metres yesterday. But by midday today, the water level of the river had clocked 26.40 metres and rising steadily due to rain in north Bengal and parts of Bihar. The cause of rise in the water levels of Mahananda and Fulohar is attributed to heavy rains in the north Bengal district. Besides these two rivers, the water level of the Ganga is also rising. Today, its water level was 23.04 metres at Manikchak Ghat due to rainfall in the upper catchments of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

The executive engineer of the irrigation department (Ganga) in Malda, Mr Somen Misra, said: “The fluctuation of the water level of Ganga from 23 to 24 metres (though is far below the danger mark) is more alarming due to severe erosion in Manikchak and Kaliachak-II block areas in southern part of this district”. In the northern part of this district, Fulohar is inundating large parts of its unprotected areas.

Recalling their plight during the floods last year, the residents of Uttar and Dakshin Bhakuria in Harishchandrapur block are spending sleepless nights.

These villages were inundated thrice last year due to rise in the water level which crossed extreme danger marks, touching 28.53 metres.
