Doctor attacked over ‘false’ death verdict

MALDA, 4 AUG: A doctor was attacked at Uttar Nayapara Primary Health Centre in Nalagola under Bamongola block by villagers claiming he had falsely declared an electrocuted patient dead.

According to the CMOH (Chief Medical Officer of Health) Dr Srikanta Roy, Meghlal Byapari (22), resident of Basipara Kupadaha died of electrocution when he was working on a high-tension electric pole. He fell off the pole after being electrocuted, added the doctor.

According to villagers, the victim was cutting the branches of a mango tree connected to a high-tension wire.

When Byapari was brought to the hospital Dr Biwas declared him dead and suggested a post-mortem for the body, terming it a police case, said the CMOH.

The in-charge of the health center, Dr Biswas, could not sense a heartbeat or any other symptoms of life, the CMOH claimed.

The relatives of the victim refused the post-mortem, fearing police harassment. They took what they thought was a dead body back home, where he reportedly suddenly showed signs of life.

The body was taken to hospital again but the on duty doctor Dr Biswas reiterated that the patient was dead. This infuriated the relatives who alleged negligence. They began to ransack the health centre, including the doctor's quarters and his chamber. The scared doctor took shelter in other places.

A huge police force from Bamangola police station rushed to spot to control the situation this evening. The body was taken to Bamangola police station.

“The doctor is so scared that he is not in a position to continue in the health centre. How can a doctor function if the villagers attack him with no cause?” Dr Roy, the CMOH, said. However, local CPI-M MLA Mr Khagen Murmu said: “Without admitting him into the hospital how can a doctor declare a patient dead? He did not examine the patient properly.” SNS
