Lecturer held on charges of torturing minor

MALDA, 3 AUG: Police today arrested Dr Mrs Ujjala Paik (Mandal), lecturer of Malda Women's College, on charges of torturing her 16-year-old domestic help. The English Bazaar police have initiated a case against her under sections 323, 325 and 341 IPC and also on Child Labour Prohibition Act 1986. The maid was beaten up when she delayed in performing a chore. Mrs Paik allegedly beat her with an iron pincer drawing blood from her nose. The victim also had injuries on her head, shoulder and hands.

The guard of the residential complex at Pirojpur, the incident site, noticed the incident and rescued the girl. He informed others when the domestic help, Shyamali Sardar, resident of North 24 Parganas, was being beaten by Mrs Paik. The victim was admitted to the district hospital for treatment.

Examining eyewitnesses of the residential complex, the police Mrs Paik to the English Bazaar police station for interrogation today. Mrs Paik's husband, a doctor was not home today.

One of the eyewitnesses to the assault incident, Mr Biswajit Guho gave the police details during the investigation. According to Mr Guho, Mrs Paik used to torture the maid regularly. Commenting on the incident, the Women's College principal Dr Chaitali Chattaraj said: “Mrs Paik has committed an offense. We do not support her act.” The maid Shyamali is an Aila victim. The employer wanted to send her back a few weeks ago but her parents requested her to keep Shyamali a few days more because they had become homeless due to Aila. ;SNS
