Magistrate intervenes on garbage issue

Statesman News Service
MALDA, 5 AUG.: The Congress, the Trinamul Congress and the BJP-led English Bazaar Municipality (EBM) finally sought the district magistrate’s intervention to resolve the problem of garbage disposal in Malda town as the meeting convened by the sub-divisional officer concluded today.

The district magistrate, Mr Sridhar Ghosh called an emergency all-political-party meeting this evening just to seek opinions from the political leaders regarding the selection of a suitable place for dumping garbage that includes medical wastes.

The EBM could not clear garbage dumped in several places in Malda town including the sites of many market places, hospitals, nursing homes, food stalls and other establishments for the past three days.

Local residents at three places have been protesting against dumping of garbage to keep their areas pollution-free in last few weeks when the EBM attempted to dump garbage.

Having failed to dispose the garbage at Chandan Park in Ward no 25 and at Nimasarai, a new area , in English Bazaar block, the EBM had to start garbage dumping in ward number 22 temporarily, near Malda town station, which is under the control of the chairman of the EBM, Mr Narendranath Tiwari.

However locals had objected to allow the EBM for dumping garbage there.

“People at every place have been opposing the civic body creating resistance. Some ruling party leaders are in league with the local people to protest against garbage dumping in all places”, said Mr Krishnendu Choudhury, the Congress MLA of English Bazaar, who attended the meeting with the SDO today. He had to seek the help from the district magistrate regarding this issue.

It may be noted that the EBM could not select a proper place for disposal of garbage including the risky medical wastes following the guideline of the pollution control board.

Locals have formed citizens’ committee to control pollution at Chandan Park and even at Nimasarai resisting garbage dumping.

Today, the pradhan of the Kotwali gram panchayat, belonging to the Congress, informed the district administration that he failed to pacify the angry villagers were against garbage dumping at Nimasarai.

A few days ago the SDO Mr. Prakash Pal convened a meeting on this issue and it was decided that the gram panchayat office bearers will inform the locals about solid waste management project and pacify them to allow the EBM for dumping garbage there.

“The EBM did not buy the land earmarked at Nimasarai for dumping garbage. Why will people allow them to dump garbage there?”, asked Mr. Indrajit Mitra, the CPI-M leader, who launched movement against the civic body demanding clearance of garbage a few days ago.

“A 20 bigha plot of land was selected at Kazigram for this project, but the civic body could not buy the plot of land on time. If the land had been bought by them the problem would have been resolved”, Mr. Mitra claimed.
