Education dept to conduct census of drop-outs

Statesman News Service
MALDA, 4 AUG.: The district education department will launch a special drive to ascertain the number of drop-out students and their situations across the district from 10 August.

Though the district took an initiative to review the situation of drop-outs in the district in comparison with last year, the education department did not get the results needed to take the initiative and provide ‘alternative education’ to them.

“We have decided to review the situation of drop-outs again, from 10 August, having failed to record the exact number of drop-outs across the district after the completion of the admission process at various primary and secondary schools,” said the district inspector of school, secondary, Mr Chinmay Sarkar.

“To provide alternative education to the drop-outs we have to start School Chalo Aviyan again. We need to know the exact number of drop-outs for the arrangement of their bridge course. Last year the number was 9, 035,” Mr Sarkar said.

Besides, the education department is going to start a training programme for teachers of primary and secondary levels from 17 August.

The training programme will continue up to November. The education department has decided to stress the need to train the teachers on the subject of child abuse and corporal punishment in schools.

The special component of the training programme will be methods for teaching science and mathematics (Kajer Majhe Ganit, Kajer Majhe Bigyan).

The teachers will be trained on methods to help students who often commit minor mistakes, as well as methods to educate disabled students and girls.
