12 students hurt in college clash

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Jan. 2: At least 12 college students were injured in a clash between the Students Federation of India and Chhatra Parishad supporters at Samsi College in Malda district today. The SFI district president Mr Animesh Sinha was admitted to the Malda district hospital with critical head injury this evening. He had to have 17 stitches administered to his head.

The trouble started in the college after the CP took out a campus rally during classes. The college had opened today after the winter vacation. A group of students belonging to the SFI protested and asked the CP to terminate the rally. Angered with the resistance, CP activists allegedly attacked the SFI supporters including its district president, Mr Sinha after classes.

Rejecting the allegation, Mr Ujjal Sheikh, working president, CP, said: “SFI supporters attacked us the first time when we were organising our programme in the college campus, injuring seven of our supporters. They were admitted in the local hospital.”

The general secretary of the SFI-led students’ union of Samsi College lodged an FIR and another FIR was lodged by district SFI leaders at Ratua police station, naming the alleged attackers including the sabhapati of the Congress-led Ratua I panchayat samiti. Police are patrolling the area to defuse tension.
