Women outdo men in voting

MALDA, Jan. 7: Majority of voters in the Sujapur by-polls were woman, the district election official said today. A total of 67,776 women had exercised their franchisee on 5 January while the number of men who voted was cited as 64,882 in the Muslim dominated areas.

The voters' turnout had been recorded as 79.43 per cent with 1,32,588 of the 1,66,920 voters exercising their franchisee. In 2006 Assembly by-polls, election department had recorded 79.67 per cent voter turnout. On the day of polling, the district magistrate had informed that on an average 80.70 percent turnout was expected by 5 p.m.

Political leaders of both the CPI-M and Congress had expected at least 84 to 85 per cent turnout in the by-polls. The CPI-M party leaders including the district secretary, Mr Jiban Moitra, said that migrant labourers of the area stayed away from the election since the date of by-poll was postponed from 27 December to 5 January.

“Many migrant labourers had come to their homes here to celebrate Id and would have voted on 27 December but since the date was deferred, they went back to their work places,” said Mr Jiban Moitra. According to the additional district magistrate (G), no postal ballot was issued to any resident of that Assembly area. The district election officials had sent papers for service votes to 38 persons, who are in defence forces. On the other hand, the district election officials have decided to issue showcause notice before lodging an FIR against the people who did not join the election duty on time. A total of 40 presiding officers and 35 first polling officers remained absent from their duty. n SNS
