DM orders ban on illegal liquor shops

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Jan. 6: In the wake of the recent deaths from consumption of spurious liquor at Khidderpore, Kolkata, the Malda administration has instructed the Bengal Excise officials to shut down illegal liquor shops in the district.

The ADM, Malda has instructed the Excise officials to collect samples of liquor from the hooch joints, get them tested and take necessary steps against the illegal liquor shop owners. According to the ADM (G), Mr P C Sit, Excise officials and police have already razed some illegal liquor shops at Mangalbari area in Old Malda in the past two days and collected samples of liquor for testing. “No one has been arrested so far. The excise department found that a group of people collect poor quality liquor and spirit from outside the state and manufacture fake Indian made foreign liquor at Mangalbari,” the ADM said.

Though, earlier too, the administration took similar steps, the result has been far from satisfactory. According to Mr Sit, the district officials will hold a meeting with the Excise department to chalk out a strategy to stop illegal sale of liquor in the district. It may be noted that several illegal liquor shops in the district are doing a brisk trade.

“After counting of votes of the Sujapur by-poll is over on 10 January, we shall review the situation,” the ADM said.
