Naco recalls blood component separation unit

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Jan. 14: Having failed to ready the required infrastructure at Malda district hospital in nine months, the health authorities have finally dropped the installation project of the Blood Component Separation Unit (BCSU), which had been lying idle in the storeroom.

It may be recalled that Malda’s was the only district hospital apart from National Medical College and Hospital to be selected for the installation of the blood component separator machine, which can separate the different components of blood such as red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets, and is helpful in blood transfusion.

Malda district hospital superintendent Dr Animesh Roy disclosed that they were unable to install the machine despite availability of funds, blaming the public works department for not completing the rooms and electrical wirings despite several reminders.

“We have no choice but to drop the project because Naco (National Aids Control Organisation) has decided to withdraw the project from the district hospital because it is still lying idle,” he told reporters.

Naco had sent the machine worth Rs 1.35 crore about nine months ago and allotted funds for the required infrastructural development for installation of the unit.

Malda district was selected in 2006 for setting up this unit on the basis of reports of record collection of blood through blood donation camps organised by non-governmental organisations here.

Activists of Malda District Voluntary Blood Donors’ Forum (MDVBDF) expressed unhappiness on coming to know that the project had been dropped.

“Such a unit was particularly imperative for the patients suffering from thalassaemia or anaemia who don’t require all the components of blood,” said MDVBDF activist Mr Soumitra Dutta.

A total of 325 thalassaemia patients in the districts of Malda, North Dinajpur and South Dinajpur are dependent on the blood bank in Malda.
