Six held for arms trade

MALDA, Jan. 25: Based on information provided by the CID, police arrested six persons in a government guesthouse at Barduari in Harishchandrapur II block office premises this morning.

Police suspect that all of them are connected with illegal arms trade and illegal trafficking. They are believed to have come to that area, which is close to the Bihar border, for the purpose. Ashok Mandal, a resident of Rajarhat area in North 24-Parganas, the leader of the gang was among those arrested. The CID had been looking for him for almost a year. Police had arrested Mandal in 1989 for illegal trafficking. Police also found knives and daggers in their possession.

They had booked the guest house with the help of a man whose relative is a government servant in Harishchandrapur. Five others are residents of North 24-Parganas. n SNS
