Cong, CPM confident of Sujapur by-polls win

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Jan 1: With three more days to go for the Sujapur Assembly by-polls, both the CPI-M and Congress camps are exuding confidence of a win. They have increased the tempo of last-minute campaigning even as more forces are being deployed for the polls.

The Congress has controlled the Sujapur Assembly since 1962. Mrs Rubi Noor was the last elected Congress MLA from the constituency and after her demise her daughter Miss Mousam Benazir Noor is contesting the by-poll as a Congress candidate against the CPI-M's Hazi Ketabuddin Sheikh.

The Congress leadership including the Malda MP, Mr AH Khan Choudhury, maternal uncle of Miss Mousam Benazir Noor, is hoping to win the by-poll by a minimum 20,000 margin.

The CPI-M is confident too. CPI-M district secretary Mr Jiban Moitra does not have any doubts of a win.

“We have nothing to lose here. But no one can ignore the popularity of our candidate who was always with the people. We expect good results for us,” said Mr Moitra.

The CPI-M today ended central campaigning after taking out a big rally in Sujapur and has scheduled a workers’ meet tomorrow.

On Saturday, the CPI-M would hold road shows in front of all polling stations.
