BSF opens fire to keep smugglers at bay

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Jan. 8: BSF jawans fired 15 rounds to dissuade cattle smugglers at the Bangladesh border at Mehadipur border in English Bazaar last night. Two cattle died and a third was wounded in the crossfire.

According to the Malda SP, Mr Satyajit Bandyopadhyay, the criminals were trying to smuggle18 heads of cattle through a spot where the border fencing is being erected when the BSF detected it and challenged them. The camels were being smuggled for processing units located in Bangladesh. “Trouble broke out when the BSF jawans spotted the smugglers on the Indian side and chased them. In retaliation, smugglers waiting on the Bangladesh side opened fire at the BSF jawans,” said Mr J C Nayak, commandant of 123-battalion BSF.

“The smugglers took advantage of ‘zero visibility’ along the border due to dense fog and after firing at the BSF jawans, they fled the spot. There were about 40 smugglers on the Indian side and about the same number was waiting on the Bangladesh side,” Mr Nayak said.

Two persons were engaged to guide the smugglers but none of them could be identified. The BSF officials informed police about the matter and police from English Bazaar went to the spot this morning in search of the smugglers. The injured cattle is being treated and two dead ones were buried, the BSF official, said.
