Funds to be returned if unutilised

MALDA, Jan 14: Funds allotted from 12th Finance Commission for repairing of embankments and bank protection work will be returned if the irrigation department in Malda cannot utilise the funds by March this year. Just to keep the allotted funds of Rs 10.15 crore the irrigation department in Malda has floated tenders and started processing to begin the works across the district. “We will have to complete at 5 percent of the work by first week of March this year. If we fail to show at least five percent work, the funds (Rs. 10.15 crore) will be taken back”, said Mr S Misra, the executive engineer, irrigation department in Malda today. According to him, irrigation officials are sorting out 627 applications in response to tenders invited for the protection of banks and repairing of embankment targeting to give work order to the contractors by 15 February. n SNS

Cattle smuggler shot dead

MALDA, Jan 14: The BSF shot dead a Bangladeshi cattle smuggler near Tilason in Habibpur, Malda district this morning and seized 20 cattle. Meanwhile, officials of 123-battalion BSF today handed over two Indian cattle smugglers to the English Bazaar police station. n SNS



Power cut

MALDA, Jan 14: Residents of a few wards in English Bazaar town today suffered a seven hour-long power cut. Power was restored in the area at about 6.05 p.m. n SNS
