CPM, RSP offices set on fire

MALDA, Jan. 11: Tension has been brewing at Mangalbari in Old Malda after the local Citu and the RSP offices were torched over the last two days. Both the district secretaries of the CPI-M and the RSP, Mr Jiban Moitra, and Mr Goutam Gupta held the local criminals responsible for the incidents. Yet, the local RSP leader and its district committee member, Mr Sarbananda Pande, said that the CPI-M backed goons were responsible for the violence at the RSP party office. “Some CPI-M backed goons set ablaze our party office at the behest of a local CPI-M councillor, Mr Atul Sarkar,” he said.

The CPI-M district secretary, Mr Jiban Moitra, denied the allegation, saying that the CPI-M office too had been torched. “It make no sense to put the blame on us. Everybody in the area knows who have been patronising hooliganism in the locality,” he said. The district secretary of the RSP, Mr Goutam Gupta, however, said that a group of local goons, engaged for long in illicit liquor trade and black-marketing diesel and patrol, attacked the party workers on 8 January and set it on fire the next night. n SNS
