Malda book fair begins

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Jan. 6: Vernacular writer Kinnar Ray  inaugurated the 20th Malda Book Fair at Malda college ground this afternoon.

Though it was a government sponsored fair, district officials including the district magistrate Mr Sridhar Ghosh were not present at the inaugural ceremony due to the model code of conduct for Sujapur by-polls as the dignitaries attending the event were politicians like the environment minister, Mr Sailen Sarkar and Malda Zilla Parishad's sabhadhipati Mrs Sabina Yeasmin and others.

“I wanted to take part in the Book Fair but due to the model code of conduct I decided to stay away. The election commission has specifically instructed us to maintain model of code of conduct till 10 January, the day after declaration of the by-poll results”, Mr Ghosh said. “We will take part in the closing ceremony of the book fair on 12 January. We are constantly monitoring every requirement for the fair over phone with the book fair committee members”, the ADM (G) Mr P C Sit said.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony, Kinnar Ray urged parents to inculcate the habit of reading books among kids. He also said that they should gift children books instead of toy guns. On the recent terror strikes in Mumbai, he criticised a section of media for the live telecast from Taj Mahal hotel and Nariman House.

A total of 120 publishers and book sellers took part in 20th Malda Book Fair. At least 15 government departments participated in the event.
