District docs to fill the gaps

MALDA, Jan 1: To make up shortage of permanent doctors in district and rural hospitals the authorities will recruit doctors from the district on contractual basis.

The chief medical officer of health, Malda, Dr. Srikanta Roy said that the department has already given us permission to recruit doctors on contractual basis from here. “After the end of the Sujapur assembly by-polls, to be held on 5 January, we will publish an advertisement for the recruitment of doctors on contractual basis”, Dr. Roy said.. The CMOH admitted that a few hospitals were facing problems because some doctors had gone on leave at the end of the year. Besides the shortage of doctors, many hospitals are facing shortage of pharmacists, nurses, and other staff and provision of health services is being hampered due to the problem.

“We have intimated the matter to the higher authorities seeking more doctors and other staff including nurses. The department authorities have assured that they would send some newly recruited doctors to Malda,” Dr. Roy said. He has urged government doctors, who are not entitled to practise privately, to provide medical services to the poor people, rather than suggesting them to go to nursing homes where they face problem of infrastructures. “It is very difficult to keep a close eye on every doctor all the time to prevent them from private practice in nursing homes. But we are trying hard to create awareness among the doctors and other hospital staff so that they can fulfil the expectation of poor people”, Dr. Roy said. n SNS
