ST facilities for Paharias mooted

MALDA, Jan. 13: Following instruction from the Malda district magistrate Mr Sridhar Ghosh, the backward classes welfare (BCW) department has launched a survey on the Paharia community residing in the district.

The DM's instruction came following a deputation on the matter by the Malda Ramkrishan Mission in which Malda RKM chief Swami Divyananda had informed the district magistrate that although the Paharias were tribes, they were not enjoying facilities available to the ST beneficiaries.

The BCW could not begin the survey due to the model code of conduct enforced for the Sujapur by-polls but the survey has now begun.

Nearly 40,000 people of the Paharia community live across the district without basic amenities. Though they have voters’ identify card, they do not have ration cards or caste certificates, Swami Divyaynanda told the DM.

Following the Lalgarh episode, the Malda district administration is ‘seriously’ considering the problem of the tribals and conducting surveys to learn their conditions but the Paharia community continued to remain obscure till the RKM drew the DM's attention.

The Revolutionary Socialists Party had also submitted a deputation to the English Bazaar block development officer (BDO) drawing attention towards the problems being faced by people of the Paharia community. n SNS
