11 drugged, robbed on train

Statesman News Service
MALDA, April 12: Eleven persons were drugged with contaminated fruit juice and robbed on the UP-Guwahati Mail train last night. The victims, including one child and one woman, are now undergoing treatment in a district hospital in Malda.

According to the Malda GRP, the group consisted of nine migrant labourers and their family members. Such migrant labourers often drink fruit juice sold by hawkers. The GRP suspects that the group was drugged through drinking this juice, while travelling in the general compartment of the UP-Guwahati Mail, coming from near Sahibganj in Bihar.

When the train reached Malda town, other passengers saw that the group were unconscious or asleep. One relative of the victims was waiting for his family members at the station and boarded the general compartment when they did not come out in time, and so discovered the group.

The 11 persons had been robbed of eight mobiles, nine wristwatches, and cash totaling nearly Rs 20,000, among other belongings.

They were returning to Harirampur in South Dinajpur. One of them was a resident of Haldibari in Jalpaiguri. The GRP has recorded the case and informed the higher authorities.
