Delimitation worries Congress

Statesman News Service
MALDA, April 13: The Sujapur Assembly segment in South Malda Lok Sabha constituency is worrying a section of the Congress leadership. While areas added to the Assembly segment after delimitation are CPI-M dominated, some Congress dominated areas of Sujapur have gone to the new Mothabari Assembly constituency, upsetting the Congress's calculations in South Malda.

The situation has given CPI-M candidate for South Malda, Dr Abdur Razzaque, the advantage in claiming he is a son of the soil. Dr Razzaque is from Uttar Lakshmipur in Mothabari. Conversely for the Congress, Miss Mausam Noor, who is the Sujapur MLA, is contesting from the North Malda Lok Sabha seat. Under the circumstances, the Congress leadership is finding it embarrassing to answer questions from the people on the subject.

It may be noted that Miss Noor had promised to work for the people of Sujapur Assembly before winning the by-poll. A section of Congress leaders in Malda are of the opinion that they might have to face a tricky situation in the Sujapur Assembly by-poll if Miss Noor wins from the North Malda Lok Sabha constituency. “Campaigning for the new candidate will prove difficult,” said several Congress leaders.

The Congress district president and South Malda Lok Sabha candidate Mr AH Khan Choudhury admitted to the problem: “We faced problems in Sujapur after the AICC declared the name of Miss Noor as candidate for North Malda. Many leaders expressed frustration with the development but we managed to put a lid on it.”

The CPI-M, meanwhile, is trying to make the most of the situation. The party is doing everything in its power to point out that Miss Noor has “betrayed” the people of Sujapur. Given the Sujapur segment's reorganization after delimitation and the CPI-M propaganda, the Congress is likely to face tough times at Sujapur.
