Police quarter looted in Gazole

MALDA, April 13: A group of thieves broke into a police quarter in Gazole police station premises last night, stealing valuables and cash.Villagers informed the duty officer Mr Raju Sarkar on finding a damaged truck and police uniform in an area near the police station at dawn. Mr Sarkar, who had been on night duty at the station, went to the spot and discovered his damaged truck. He then returned to his quarter and found that the thieves had stolen Rs 20,000 in cash from his room.The thieves had also entered Mr Manajit Charkraborty's room, the sub-inspector of police, and took mobile phones and cash. Mr Chakraborty was on leave at the time. Gazole police station is treating the case as serious and has started an investigation. No one has been arrested so far. It may be noted that on the night of 4 April a group of thieves broke into a police quarter in English Bazaar police station. It is uncertain whether the incidents are linked.Giving no Press statement, Gazole police station said that the thieves came in a group of three or more. They locked the door of an attached quarter from the outside. The sub-inspector of police, Mohd. Giyasuddin, had left the room and returned home at midnight, after the completion of his duty.Police found a wristwatch at the spot and started an investigation on the basis of the clue, suspecting that the wristwatch belonged to the thieves.
