Party bigwigs to rally in Malda

Statesman News Service
MALDA, April 6: Malda is gearing up for a clash of titans with chief minister Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and Congress chief Mrs Sonia Gandhi scheduled to attend poll rallies for their respective parties in the district on 27 April.

According to the CPI-M leadership in Malda, Mr Bhattacharjee would address a meeting at Samsi in Ratua within North Malda LS seat on 25 April and leave for North and South Dinajpur districts thereafter. “Mr Bhattacharjee would return to Malda on 27 April and address an election rally at Pakuahat in North Malda constituency and another rally in South Malda constituency the same evening.” The leadership said.

Mrs Sonia Gandhi is scheduled to attend an election rally in Malda on the same date as well and the CPI-M leadership believes, it would allow Mr Bhattacharjee to give a befitting reply to Mrs Gandhi's speech.

According to the Congress leaders, mainly followers of the Mr AH Khan Choudhury who is contesting from South Malda, Mrs Gandhi has agreed to attend an election rally in North Malda following the request of the constituency's Congress candidate Miss Mausam Noor.

Quoting Mr AH Khan Choudhury, the Kaliachak town Congress president, Mr Enarul Islam, said: “The venue and time for Mrs Sonia Gandhi's 27 April meeting would be finalised on 10 April. Mrs. Gandhi would not attend any programme in South Malda parliamentary constituency.”
