Gang fight in Kaliachak kills one

MALDA, April 13: Kaliachak town remained tense throughout the day, after a clash occurred between two groups of villagers last night over collecting tola (tax) from unauthorised shops in footpaths on either the side of the road in Kaliachak along NH~ 34.Trouble broke out when a Chhatra Parishad leader, Mohd Masidur Rahman was injured when people from the opponent group attacked him. He was hit hard by a liquor bottle and was admitted to the Malda district hospital around 11.30 pm. The clash took a political turn as majority of the goons belonged to the RSP. Soon, the two rival groups residing at Gharialichak and Sultanganj fired several rounds and hurled bombs. It continued till mid night disrupting traffic movement on NH~34.Police fired in the air to disperse the two groups and patrolling continued through out the night but no one has been arrested. When contacted, the SP Malda, Mr Satyajit Bandyopadhyay said: “We are keeping an eye on the situation”.In another incident, one Swapan Sinha (40) was killed when a bomb exploded at Sabdalpur village under the jurisdiction of Baishnabnagar police station, last night. The incident, soon became a political issue as the victim was the husband of Mrs Nirada Sinha, a Congress member of Bedrabad gram panchayat in Kaliachak III.
