Robbery on premises of police station

Statesman News Service
MALDA, April 5: A group of thieves broke into a quarter in English Bazaar police station premises and took away valuables and cash last night. Thieves broke into another house attached to English Bazaar police station.
Both police and local people were taken aback when the incident came to light this morning. Victims including the wife of Mr Uttam Das, a police sub-inspector, lodged a complaint with the police station this morning.
Police are treating the case as serious and have started an investigation. After primary enquiries, police stated that the thieves had gained information that no one was present in the houses.
Mrs Ratna Das and her son Babai went to attend an invitation and did not return last night. Mr Das was absent after being posted to Nadia recently. When Mrs Das returned to her home, she saw that the lock had been forced open.
According to Mrs Das thieves opened a chest taking ornaments worth Rs 1,00,000 and Rs 25,000 in cash.
A rented house belonging to Mr Nausad Ali only 100 metres away was also burgled. Thieves took away valuables worth nearly Rs 1 lakh. Mr Ali and his wife went to their original home yesterday and did not return last night.
“We never thought that the house would be unsafe at night because it is close to English Bazaar police station,” Mr Ali said.
Police officers in English Bazaar police station refused to comment about the case.
