Malaria stings six blocks of Malda

MALDA, April 7: After a thorough survey the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) has identified six blocks of the Malda district as being affected by malaria. There is a total of 30 blocks in the state.

The new map of malaria-prone blocks in the state sees Manikchak block coloured in red to identify it as "most alarming." Gurubathan in Darjeeling, Lalgola, Bhagabangola I&II and Sagardhighi blocks have also been given the same high danger rating.

Manikchak in Malda, Chanchal I and II, Harishchandrapur I and II and English Bazaar blocks have been coloured yellow, signifying an "alarming" rating.

Following the NRHM's report district health officials have planned to make door-to-door visits to make people aware of the importance of using mosquito nets.

The deputy chief medical officer of health II Dr D Haldar said: “We have planned to select NGOs to carry out awareness programme in these blocks. The NGOs will use Deltramethrin, the only insecticide, in water to wet mosquito nets used by the villagers to save them from mosquito bites.”

The director state NRHM Mr Chandan Sinha has informed all CMOHs to engage NGOs to carry out the job for using Deltramethrin to protect people from malaria.

Deltramethrin will be mixed and diluted in a given amount of water, and mosquito nets will then be dipped into it. The nets will be handed over after drying. Each net can protect villagers from mosquito bites for up to six months.

According to a letter sent by the NRHM to the Malda CMOH, a total of 30 blocks have been identified as malaria-prone in nine districts of this state. Garubathan block in Darjeeling, Karandighi in North Dinajpur have been identified as malaria affected.

In Murshidabad several blocks have been identified as malaria prone. They are Lalgola, Bhagabangola I, II & III, Sagardighi, Nabagram, Jiagunj, Raninagar I and Hariharpara blocks.

On the other hand, Raniganj, Galsi-I, Aushgram II, Faridpur in Burdwan district and Khanakul I and Polba-Dadpur in Hooghly district, Canning I and Kakdwip in South 24 Parganas, Ranaghat in Nadia district, Nandigram, Nandakumar Bhagabanpur-I and Pashkura in East Midnapore district have been identified as malaria-prone.
