Meidics blamed for death of 11-yr-old

MALDA, April 15: Angry villagers turned violent and ransacked a public health centre (PHC) at Bhaluka under Harishchandrapur police station today following the death of an 11-year-old boy this afternoon, allegedly due to medical negligence.

Santosh Parihar, a class VI student, nearly drowned in a pond at about noon today. Local villagers rushed him to a PHC at Bhaluka, 300m from the spot. However, there was no doctor to attend to him at the PHC. According to the relatives of the victim, Santosh died at the hospital at about 1.30 p.m., after receiving no attention for around one-and-a-half hours.

On hearing of the death, angry locals ransacked the PHC.

The chief medical officer of health, Dr Srikanta Roy, said: “I have asked the BMOH to send an inquiry report to me. Two doctors were posted at the hospital. The doctors are supposed to maintain alternate watches, so that a doctor is in attendance 24 hours to see to emergency patients. We are inquiring as to why the doctor was absent without having given notice.”

The body of the boy has been sent for postmortem. “Without a postmortem report we cannot tell whether he died on the way to the hospital or at the PHC itself, due to lack of medical care. If the doctor is found guilty, action will be taken against him,” Dr Roy said. n SNS
