Runaway inmates

MALDA, April 16: Police intercepted six girl inmates of a government home from Malda Town Station today. The inmates had fled the shelter. Members of an NGO spotted the inmates, who had fled after unlocking the gate of the home, and informed the police.

A section of the inmates of the particular home were currently agitating demanding release from the home called the District Shelter. Raising allegations against the home authority the agitators had boycotted food as well. Suspecting that the six inmates who had fled today, were behind the agitation, officials of the social welfare department had decided to shift them to another government home and had sought the department director's permission on the matter. “We had decided to shift the girls to six different homes,” Mr Pratyarpan Singh Roy, an officer of the social welfare department, said. All the inmates are below 18 years. n SNS
