Youtube to showcase polling in India

Statesman News Service
MALDA, April 6: The chief electoral officer, Mr Debasish Sen, has urged all returning officers and district election officials to photograph interesting events during the general elections. He aims to upload them to the video-sharing website Youtube to allow the world to see how elections are held in India.

The CEO, writing online in his personal blog, says: “We need to capture interesting events during general elections 2009 using digital cameras. I have advised all Returning Officers (ROs) to dedicate a creative person with a digital camera to capture such events.”

Besides capturing election campaigns through folk art, witty cartoons and graffiti on film, Mr Sen has suggested taking pictures of handicapped persons being helped to cast their votes and visually challenged voters using Braille to exercise their franchise. Good examples of polling booth layouts, interesting patterns in queues of voters and booths in remote areas where voters depend on ponies, van rickshaws, boats and tractors as transportation are recommended subjects for photographers.

Celebrities queuing up in front of polling stations, Central forces and police in interesting poses while on duty, and moving cameras of media persons also made the list. The CEO stated that he was planning to upload the clips to Flickr and YouTube for the world to see. He urged the ROs to come up with a CD of interesting events with appropriate captions.
