All eyes on North Malda seat

Statesman News Service
MALDA, March 3: The new North Malda parliamentary seat is now a key player in the Congress and Trinamul Congress' seat-sharing adjustments in north and south Bengal.

The Congress has already claimed two Lok Sabha seats in Malda, and had proposed that the Trinamul Congress contest in Balurghat, instead of North Malda.

The Trinamul's proposed candidate for North Malda, Mr Goutam Chakraborty, former Congress MLA and former Congress-led Malda zilla parishad sabhadhipati, has started working and organising meetings with workers in North Malda. However, he says he would be happy to withdraw his candidature, if Mamata Banerjee makes the request.

Mr Chakraborty commented: “Nothing has been finalised as yet. The state Trinamul leader, Mr Mukul Roy, phoned me this morning and said that it would take time to finalise matters. We will have to wait for the seat-sharing adjustments in south Bengal. I will leave for Kolkata tomorrow to discuss the matter.”

He continued: "If the Trinamul Congress adjusts seats with the Congress in south Bengal according to their wishes, it may take a final decision to withdraw its candidate from North Malda."

Meanwhile, the district Trinamul Congress president, Mr Dulal Sarkar, has claimed that Mamata Banerjee had already agreed to quit the two Malda seats for the greater interests of her party and the Congress.
