Examinees cope with dark, dark days

Statesman News Service
RAIGANJ/MALDA/JALPAIGURI, March 5: North Dinajpur and Malda districts have suffered from severe power cuts since last Wednesday, causing disruption to Madhyamik, Higher Secondary and ICSE examinees.

To the frustration of the affected students and their guardians, power department officials have not been able to promise any change in the situation over the next few days.

“The state power minister Mr Mrinal Bandapadhay had previously pledged that power supply would remain constant during the Madhyamik examinations. This assurance is now taking a severe beating,” complained Joydeep Bhowmick of Milanpara in Raiganj, a Madhyamik examinee,

Commenting on the situation, Mr Das, the divisional engineer of the Raiganj circle, West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd, said: “There is a shortfall in power generation, forcing us to curtail the power supply during the Madhyamik examinations. It is not possible to improve the situation within the next few days. However, we have tried to be make sure the examination halls are not disturbed.”

The frequency of power cuts has increased alarmingly in Malda since yesterday. Chanchal sub-division went without power for three consecutive hours yesterday, while Malda town suffered protracted power cuts today.

The divisional manager of the State Electricity Distribution Company Limited in Malda, Mr DK Mandal, said: “The load-shedding is controlled by the Central Load Despatch: we do not have any control over it.”

Meanwhile, the district Congress submitted a memorandum to the circle manager of the electricity board against the frequent power cuts.
