Rail blockade disrupts services

MALDA, March 1: Train services in the eastern and northeast frontier railway zone were disrupted by demonstrations today leaving passengers stranded for hours. The seven-hour rail blockade were undertaken in protest at the proposed splitting up of the Malda Railway Division.

Members of the Malda Railway Division Banchao Committee (MRDBC) including political leaders, trade union activists and the Malda Merchants’ Chamber of Commerce (MMCC) blocked railway tracks at Rathbari railway crossing in English Bazaar town at 6 a.m.

The agitation was withdrawn at around 1.10 pm when two railway officials from the MRD verbally assured the agitators that they would arrange a meeting after 5 March between the DRM Mr Anup Sahu and members of MRDBC.

On the same day the district Intuc staged a rail roko agitation near the Malda town station from 11 am to 1 pm led by the district unit president Mr Narendranath Tiwari on the same issue.

The assistant commercial manager Mr S Acharya and assistant operating manager Mr R K Sinha stated that they would talk to the DRM about the matter.

A highly placed executive of a leading English daily, Mr Aloke Mishra, said that he and his family had had a harrowing time after being stranded for hours near New Farakka. “We were returning to NJP from Orissa. As the demonstration dragged on we remained cooped up in the stuffy compartment. The train reached its destination about eight hours after the scheduled time of arrival,” Mr Mishra said. n SNS
