Marxists using new poll campaign strategy

Statesman News Service
MALDA, March 5: The CPI-M has launched a campaign behind Dr Abdur Razzaque, candidate for the South Malda Lok Sabha seat, by collecting names and addresses of all his direct and indirect students for future contact.

The South Malda Lok Sabha constituency cover areas under Kaliachak block I, II and III.

The CPI-M candidate for the South Malda Lok Sabha seat was the former teacher of economics in the commerce department of Malda College and recently retired from the post of Principle at Kaliachak College.

The Malda CPI-M leaders decided to work on the student voters last night at the party office, when Dr Razzaque went to meet the top leaders of the CPI-M.

The CPI-M candidate Dr Razzaque said, “After the lists are completed, I will meet with my thousands of students.”

The former principal would also go to his village of Uttar Laxmipur in Kaliachak II block, where he was born to seek votes from the residents of this traditionally Congress-dominated belt.
Dr Razzaque has chalked out poll issues and planned to focus on rural development for poor farmers, while highlighting loopholes in the Centre's plans which have failed to help the plight of poor farmers. Dr Razzaque appears well equipped to talk about mistakes made by the Centre, as he based his PhD research papers on this subject. The papers were submitting under the guidance of Dr Manas Dasgupta from the University of North Bengal.

“My papers have been appreciated by experts in Bangladesh during a discussion on rural development. If I am elected as MP, I would stress the need to launch more rural credit systems for poor farmers, based on the theory of the ‘vicious circle of poverty’. These rural credit systems would ensure that poor people do not fall into debt traps,” said Dr Razzaque.

“Many recommendations in my research papers are yet to be implemented in the present policy of the Central government. If I am elected, I will push for their integration,” he added.

The CPI-M candidate also criticised a group of political leaders for inspiring big borrowers no to pay back their bank loans. He said policies must be put in place to solve the problem, and that refusing to repay loans was not the solution.

The Malda CPI-M had prepared a panel of three candidates - Dr Abdus Sattar, minister of state for minority affairs; Mr Jafrullah, college teacher and chairman of madrassa recruitment board in north Bengal, and Dr Razaaque. Dr Razaaque was their third alternative, and was only nominated as candidate for South Malda Lok Sabha when Dr Sattar and Mr Jafrullah refused the offer. (END)
