State to seek additional forces for LS elections

MALDA, March 3:The state would ask the Centre 150 to 200-company Central forces for security reasons during the Parliamentary elections, said the state Home secretary Mr Ardhendu Sen here this evening. “ If we get sufficient Central forces, we would be able to conduct the elections peacefully,” he added.

Mr Sen and the director general of police Mr A B Vora were here today and held a meeting with the Malda administrative officials on election preparations and the law and order situation of the district along the Bangladesh border.

“Preparations for the first phase of Lok Sabha polls began from Malda today. We will explore the law and order situation of the bordering districts. We shall visit North Dinajpur district tomorrow,” Mr Sen said.

“It is impossible for us to deploy armed forces in all 52,000 polling stations in the state. The election officials would continue identifying the sensitive and highly sensitive polling stations till a few days of the polling day and chart out deployment of the armed forces accordingly,” the Home secretary, said.

According to him, the state government has urged the Centre to sanction a helicopter for monitoring 18 police station areas of three districts - Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia through out the year to check Maoist menace.
