Cops rescue ‘witches’ from being lynched

MALDA, March 9: Police rescued two tribal men and their family members at Shyampur village under Gazol police station after a tribal group had stamped them as witches and earmarked them for lynching.

Gazol police summoned some of the attackers and the victims to the police station for interrogation today. The terror-stricken victims did not turn up.

After conducting preliminary investigations, police believe that the attackers had plotted to kill them for some landed property. The police are considering arresting some of the attackers.

According to the police, Matla Kisku, a relative of the victims, led the attack. “Kisku mobilised the tribals claiming that the victims had cast an evil spell on his ill daughter,” the police said.

“I saw a tribal woman weeping and running towards the police station when I was coming to Malda last evening. I suggested that the police look into the matter and they send a team to rescue them,” said local CPI-M MLA Mr Khagen Murmu.

“I do not know whether it was a case of witch-hunting or a land-related crime,” he added. n SNS
