Meet to zero in on Malda candidate

MALDA, March 2: Yet to decide a candidate for the North Malda Parliamentary constituency, the Congress has decided to convene a meeting on the subject to finalise the name. The decision comes following the visit of the party central election observer Mr Ittefaq Alam yesterday.

Mr Alam's visit to Malda is significant with the “Swiss citizenship” controversy raging against the proposed Congress candidate Dr AN Khan Choudhury. Mr Alam held a meeting with leaders in Malda town including the English Bazaar MLA Mr Krishnendu Choudhury and Kharba Congress MLA Mr Asif Mehbub yesterday.

The leaders proposed a heavyweight candidate for North Malda in the absence of Mr Priya Ranjan Das Munshi. They finally demanded Mrs Dipa Das Munshi's candidature, although she is a probable for the Raiganj constituency. The name of three MLAs has also come up for consideration during discussions in the past few days for North Malda. The names under consideration are that of Mrs Sabitri Mitra, Mr Krishnendu Choudhury and Mr Asif Mehbub.

The block Congress leaders also suggested nominating a Hindu candidate for the North Malda seat to gain votes from the Barind belt. n SNS
