Collision kills 11 in Malda

MALDA, March 12: Eleven members of a marriage party were killed in the early hours of this morning when their vehicle collided with a stationary lorry near Kaluadighi on National Highway 34 under Malda police station. Ten of the victims including two women died on the spot, the ASP, Malda, Mr Kalyan Mukherjee, said.

Police rescued a minor boy, Gourav Saha, and the driver, Mr Tinku Mandal, from the mangled vehicle and sent them to the Malda district hospital for treatment. Gourav succumbed to his injuries around 8 a.m. Mr Mandal has been operated on and is in a serious condition.

The ASP said that police reached the spot within an hour of the accident. They found 10 people dead at the site of the crash. Mr Mukherjee said the victims were returning home from Alinagar village after attending a wedding ceremony last night. They were all residents of Station Para, close to Samsi Railway station, under Ratua police station.

The dead have been identified as Soumya Sarkar, Laxmi Roy, Papia Mandal, Putul Saha, Rajesh Saha, Ranjit Mandal, Baliraj Saha, Ujjal Haldar, Sunil Mandal and Uttam Saha.

“We will arrest the driver on charges of negligence. We fear the accident was the driver's fault. Nobody, however, has lodged any complaint so far,” the ASP added.
