Madrassa chairman accused of molesting minor

MALDA, March 2: A minor Muslim girl student of a madrassa today lodged a complaint with the English Bazaar police station against the chairman of the institution on charges of sexual molestation.

The victim, a resident of Sambalpur under the jurisdiction of Ratua police station, alleged that the chairman, Moulana Nurul Islam was sexually abusing her for the past few days in the campus. In her complaint she mentioned that on 24 February she had written to her mother about the past cases. According to her, Moulana Nurul Islam would visit the residential school campus at night and used to call many girls individually in his chamber.

It may be noted that more than 50 girls of the madrassa, located at Anandipur under the Norhatta Gram Panchayat, in English Bazaar, met the Malda SP on 27 February and informed him about their plight. The victims also claimed that the chairman and his associates threatened to drive out a few girls for meeting the SP.

Meanwhile, police are on the lookout for the absconding chairman. In another incident today, a madrassa board examinee, Lutfulnessa was killed in a road accident while returning from the examination centre. Angry residents blocked the main state highway after the incident.

Eye witnesses said that the victim, a student of Khanpur High Madrassa was returning from Ratua High madrassa after today's exam. The exam got over at 2 p.m. and she was returning home at Baharal, with her relative on a two-wheeler when a lorry hit the two-wheeler and ran over victim.
