Schoolkid cooks up hostage scenario

MALDA, March 6: A high school student who had run away from home earlier this week and pretended that he had been kidnapped has been traced.

Subhajit Das, a class IX student of Bibhuti Bhushan High School in English Bazar town, ran away from his house on 4 March and produced a false kidnapping case script. According to the police in Malda, the boy has been traced to Hooghly district. “We expect to bring him back soon,” Malda ASP Mr Kalyan Mukherjee said.

“Assuming a false name, the boy tricked a lorry driver and managed to secure a helper’s job to flee Malda,” the police said.

The matter came to light when his father lodged a complaint with the police today. According to the father, Mr Nitai Das, Subhajit had been missing since 4 March. Mr Das also told police that they had received three phone calls from a Kolkata fixed-line phone number. “The caller said: ‘Don’t worry. Your son will be returning after some days. We will release him after doing some important job,’” he explained.

Investigating the incident, Malda police contacted their Hooghly counterparts and learnt of the boy’s presence with the lorry driver in Hooghly district. n SNS
