Villagers stay put as wild boar goes on rampage

MALDA, March 13: Fishermen and farmers are avoiding going to Narayanpur Char, an island on the Ganga, for fear of wild boar attack since Wednesday.

A wild boar attacked and injured at least 10 people on the island yesterday. Three of them were admitted to Malda district hospital in critical condition and four are under treatment in Manikchal block health centre. Responding to the situation, divisional forest officer Mr Ashok Pratap Singh today sent forest officials to collect details from the spot of occurrence and from the victims admitted in hospitals. “I am not sure whether it was a wild boar or not. A wild boar cannot attack and injure such a large number of people. I suspect it is some other animal. We need to identify the animal and trap it,” the forester, said.

It is learnt that a few days ago, fishermen tried to flush out the animal from its hideout in a bush. Since then it has grown violent and has been attacking fishermen or farmers with sharp tusks and claws, the victims said. According to the villagers, wild boars came from Jharkhand on the west side of Ganga.n SNS
