Striving hard to finalise N Malda candidate

Statesman News Service
MALDA, March 4: The AICC today decided to send Mr Saqil Ansari as an observer to decide the candidate for North Malda constituency. The decision came after another observer, Mr I Alam, reported difficulties in interacting with local leaders several days earlier.

Mr Ansari held a meeting with leaders including MLAs and the former district Congress president in order to finalise the candidate for North Malda with the high command through the proper channels.

The district congress has experienced problems in selecting its candidates after the “Swiss citizenship” controversy raging against the proposed candidate, Dr AN Khan Choudhury.

Miss Mausam Noor was included in the list of proposed candidates as the second choice for the North Malda Lok Sabha seat. However, Congress party sources said that a section of Congress leaders including MLAs objected to her standing as well as Mr Choudhury, Malda Congress MP, criticising the selection of more than one member from the Ghani family.

Some leaders demanded that a heavyweight senior leader be selected for the seat, while another group have been calling for a young, dynamic and preferably Hindu leader in order to win over the tribal and OBC-dominated Barind belt.

When Mr I Alam came to Malda leaders directly blamed two general secretaries of the Malda district Congress committee for creating problems in the selection of a candidate for the North Malda seat.

At today's meeting Mrs Sabitri Mitra, former district Congress president and MLA from Araidanga, topped the new list of candidates for North Malda. Figures including the English Bazaar MLA are now attempting to manage the ticket if Mrs Mitra does not agree to stand in North Malda, party sources said.
