No action yet on Swiss citizenship issue

Statesman News Service
MALDA, March 9: The joint CEO of the election commission in West Bengal, Mr S Ghosh, has asked the Malda district magistrate Mr Sridhar Ghosh to take immediate action on the Swiss citizenship issue of an Indian voter ~ to be more precise, a senior Congress leader.

Controversy ensued after a complaint was lodged by a Malda advocate about the Swiss citizenship of Dr AN Khan Choudhury, elder brother of Malda MP Mr AH Khan Chowdhury. No action has yet been taken on the matter.

In a letter to the DM last month, the joint CEO also asked him to inform the commission about the actions that were taken after verifying the citizenship status of Dr Khan Choudhury.

The Malda sub-divisional officer and the electoral registration officer of the English Bazaar Assembly constituency, Mr Prakash Pal, took the initiative in executing the joint CEO's instructions. He discovered technical problems and decided to seek clarification from the CEO. He also drew the district magistrate's attention to his seeking of clarification from the joint CEO on Friday.

The district magistrate, Mr Sridhar Ghosh, said: “I do not have information about the matter. Either the OC, elections, or the SDO or the ADM (election) would be able to describe the status of the matter.”

The ADM (election), Mr Balai Chand Bandyopadhyay, said from the CEO's office: “I cannot recall the matter. I got the SDO's report and sent it to the DM for his perusal.” The OC elections, Mr H Biswas, was not available for comment.

A Malda advocate, Mr Ashoke Agarwala, had lodged a complaint with the CEO, West Bengal, against Dr AN Khan Choudhury for the inclusion of his name in the voters’ list despite his being a Swiss citizen. Mr Agarwala also claimed that Dr Khan Choudhury was still receiving a pension from the Swiss government for his service.
