4 held for fake currency racket


MALDA, 10 SEPT: Acting on a tip off the Intelligence branch of the BSF and Malda police jointly conducted a raid and arrested four persons close to the Indo-Bangladesh border, in Kalaichak-III block. Fake currency worth Rs 2 lakh was seized from their possession. The BSF had to seek help from police when the accused escaped along a border road in a Maruti van belonging to a local doctor. Police later intercepted their vehicle and caught them. Those arrested have been identified as Ainul Haque (27), Sultan Mia (25), Khoka Mia (25) and Ashok Ghosh (driver), all residents of Chori-Anantapur area in Kalaichak -III block. During interrogation they confessed before police and BSF that they were assigned to hand over the fake currency to a person in Kolkata. Both police and the Border Security Force have admitted that many Indians are engaged in fake currency business along the border and they are regularly smuggling in counterfeit notes from Bangladesh. The BSF commandant, Mr R Kumar said: “Many children and women have been engaged to bring counterfeit notes from Bangladesh. Lack of women officers hamper our search procedures.” ;SNS
