MALDA, 18 SEPT: This is Mahabharata all over again; only at stake was a daughter instead of a wife.
A father, after losing all his money and ornaments at the sweepstake, had wagered his daughter and lost her too.
The incident occurred at Satgharia in English Bazaar police station, Malda district on Wednesday.
“Though no one has lodged any complaint, the police have started an investigation into it,” the Malda superintendent of police Mr Satyajit Bandyopadhyay, said.
It is learnt that one Ismail Sheikh put his daughter Fatima Khatun, a class XI student of Mahananda Higher Secondary School on ante in a drunken state after he had lost all his money and ornaments in a gambling match with one Mustafa.
The girl had gone to the spot to bring back her father home.
Sheikh, who had lost all his belongings by then and was desperate to win it back, chose to wager her for a final roll of the dice.
Unfortunately for him, Mustafa won the last round too and decided to take the girl to his place against her will.
Others present at the spot informed the villagers and panchayat officials and a group of villagers rescued the girl from the Sultanpur village.
